Doctor Gerard Furlong has been a practicing anaesthetist for nearly 20 years and has enjoyed a rewarding and successful career in the medical profession. He graduated from St Bartholomew’s college hospital in 1992 and started his career at Dunganon hospital in Northern Ireland. He has worked in several other hospitals in the UK and spent time teaching courses to trainee anaesthetists at Coventry and Warwick hospital in the Midlands.
During the course of his career Gerard Furlong has had the opportunity to work within several different disciplines in the medical profession. His time in Northern Ireland was spent on the Trauma elective ward although later he was to decide that his true calling was for obstetrics and assisting women at childbirth. He spent many years working on the obstetrics ward at Coventry and Warwick hospital playing a vital role in the safe delivery of thousands of children and even having one or two named after him.
The anaesthetist Gerard Furlong is an active member of several professional societies for whom he contributes articles and assists in research projects. Currently he is a member of the DAS (Difficult Airways Society) who aim to improve management of patient’s airways by anaesthetics and support personnel. He is also a longstanding member of the Intensive Care Society as well as an active member of SCATA (Society for Computers And Technology in Anaesthesia). Recently he has been working on a research project with Drs Senthil Kumaran and Martin Hurrell to develop an implementation guide for a HL7 CDA anaesthesia record.
When he is not working or researching articles Ged Furlong likes
to unwind. He is also a keen sailor and still enjoys skiing when
he can find the time to get away.
